2 Timothy 1:6–7 (ESV) 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a SPIRIT not of fear but of power and love and selfcontrol. Paul wanted to remind Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God that was in him. This is a good encouragement for us. We need to Fan into flame the gift of God! This verb is a metaphor for rekindling a fire. This fire we are fanning is the fire of the Holy Spirit. Christians were meant to be on fire! The term gift or charisma occurs sixteen times in Paul’s Epistles and only once elsewhere in the NT, 1Peter 4:10. The word means the extraordinary operations of the Holy Spirit in the church which includes all spiritual gifts. Our supernatural spiritual gift from God should be fanned into a flame, a roaring fire.
