Hebrews 7:1 (ESV) For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham.
Funny story. The culmination about Melchizedek recorded in Hebrews 7, can be given in 5 minutes. So, stay with me to the end. The end is powerful. Melchizedek’s history: this is it, nothing more.
Genesis 14:18–20 (ESV) 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”
And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Big deal that Abraham gave him 10% of all he had.
This shows that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham. Melchizedek was a priest of God 500
years before God gave Moses the Law, the role of priest, and temple worship. However, 1000 years later David mentions Melchizedek.
Psalm 110:4 (ESV) The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Psalm 110:1 is quoted often in the NT, and Jesus Himself quotes this in Matthew 22:41-45 to prove HIS deity. So, verse 4 is clearly speaking of Jesus as a priest after the order of Melchizedek. About 1000 after David, Hebrews quotes verse 4.
Hebrews 5:5–6 (ESV) 5 Jesus was appointed by God who said to Jesus, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you;” 6 God also says, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
