James 3:17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Previously in Chapter 3, God has shown us that the human tongue is like the fire of hell and no one can control it. Now God counters the hell fire of the tongue with wisdom that comes from above. If we are honest, we immediately recognize how far we, our tongue, fall short of God’s wisdom from above. However, we recall in James 2:8 that we live under the Royal Law of Love and have the Holy Spirit indwelling us.  Note what God tells us in verse 13.

James 3:13  Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.

In the original the word for “understanding” describes one who is an expert, who has special knowledge or training. God is talking to us. We are the ones who have been taught and have special knowledge of the Royal Law of Love.
