Luke 2:8–14 (ESV) 8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Baby is born is born in a stable in an insignificant town, Bethlehem, in Israel 5 miles from Jerusalem. Yet approximately 2.2 billion call themselves Christians and celebrate HIS birth. What is the big deal about this baby?
Luke 1:26–38 (ESV) The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David (who was also born in Bethlehem). The virgin’s name was Mary. 31Gabriel said, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to YOUR WORD.”
This message about this baby and his mother was prophesied by Isaiah 800 years earlier.
Isaiah 7:14 (ESV) Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (meaning God with us). Jesus born is now God with us.
